How to edit a PDF

PDFs are designed to look the same everywhere, which makes them tricky to edit. Here’s what you can change, how, and the limits worth knowing.

Edit a PDF in your browser

1Open the PDF Editor and choose your file.
2Use Add text to type anywhere, or Edit text to change an existing line.
3Highlight, draw, add shapes, images, a signature, checkboxes or form fields from the toolbar.
4Reorder, rotate, crop or delete pages in the sidebar, then click Download.

Changing existing text: how it works

A PDF stores text as individually positioned letters, not paragraphs. When you use Edit text, the original line is covered with its background colour and your new text is written on top in a matching standard font. It looks right on text-based PDFs, but the old words are still inside the file — never use this to redact confidential information.

Organising pages

In the editor you can also drag pages to reorder them, rotate and crop them, add blank pages, delete pages and insert other PDFs — then save everything as one file or split it into single pages.

When to convert instead

For heavy rewrites — whole paragraphs that need to reflow — convert the PDF to Word, edit it there, and convert it back with Word to PDF.
